On May 31, the Flamenco Gala celebrates its third edition, this time in the breathtaking Zonnehuis Theater in Amsterdam—a monumental venue built in the iconic style of the Amsterdam School.

This annual event brings flamenco dance and singing talents from across the Netherlands in an evening filled with passion, rhythm, and artistic expression.

Expect an evening-long program full of original flamenco choreographies, presented by both emerging and seasoned talents, aged 7 to 70, and accompanied by top-tier live flamenco music.

More than 70 participants from beginner to professional
This year, more than 70 students from flamenco schools in Amsterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, Leiden, and Rotterdam will take the stage. The participants span all levels—from absolute beginners to professionals—and have spent the past year working on choreographies that reflect their personal journeys through flamenco.
Professional dancers and teachers will also perform, making this Gala a vibrant celebration of the flamenco community’s diversity and growth.

Featuring the Tiri Tiri Flamenco Choir
The Tiri Tiri Flamenco Choir, directed by Yota Baron, and founded in 2019 through Baron’s flamenco singing school, has become a staple of the Dutch flamenco scene, regularly performing at cultural events and festivals such as the Spanish Film Festival.

Waar The BVR Flamenco Big Band ten tonele verschijnt, is er spektakel. De bigband staat onder leiding van saxofonist/componist/arrangeur de in Spanje geboren Nederlander Bernard van Rossum. Het 21-koppige ensemble won tien jaar geleden de eerste prijs bij de Meerjazz International Big Band Competition en heeft sindsdien heel wat harten veroverd op verschillende podia, zoals onder andere dat van North Sea Jazz. Ook heeft van Rossum de prestigieuze Rogier van Otterloo Award gewonnen.

De groep wordt wel vaker omschreven als een uniek fenomeen. De BvR Flamenco Big Band brengt namelijk het vuur van flamenco-elementen naar een nieuw niveau met van kleurrijke orkestratie en het dynamische bereik dit forse ensemble. De symbiose van flamenco harmonieën en -ritmes een frisse en een folkloristische context bieden ruim baan voor uitvoerige solo’s. ‘The BVR Flamenco Big Band bewijst dat flamenco en jazz niet alleen kunnen samengaan, maar muziek kunnen vormen die zowel aangenaam is om naar te luisteren als trouw blijft aan haar aard en oorsprong’, zo omschrijft All About Jazz. En Jazzenzo schrijft: ‘Bandleider, componist en saxofonist Van Rossum is erin geslaagd niet alleen een geluid, maar ook een idioom te smeden dat staat als een huis!’

The BVR Flamenco Big Band neemt danseres Irene Alvarez mee. Irene Álvarez uit Sevilla leerde dansen bij meesters als El Güito, Manolo Marin, Javier Latorre, Isabel Bayón en Manuel Betanzos. Voortbouwend op de traditionele flamenco heeft ze haar eigen onmiskenbare stijl ontwikkeld die afwisselt tussen een impulsieve en soms moderne expressie en de elegantie van de Sevilliaanse school.

We brengen Spaanse flamenco legendes José Manuel León, Inma La Carbonera en Karen Lugo en het Nederlandse Zarzamora Flamenco voor een hele dag flamenco in de open lucht op Kunsthal Square.

Verwacht live muziek, studenten optredens, een Spaanse DJ-set samengesteld door Leona Brux, en Cati Gomez die de kunst van de Jamón laat zien — ter plekke gesneden, precies zoals het hoort.
